How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?
Most patients benefit from a cleaning every six months, but gum health, medical history, and past dental problems can change that schedule.

Why six months is the usual rhythm
For many adults and children, twice-yearly cleanings are enough to remove tartar, check for early cavities, and catch gum inflammation before it becomes harder to treat.
Even excellent brushing and flossing cannot remove tartar once it hardens. Professional cleanings keep those deposits from building up around the gums.
When you may need cleanings more often
Patients with gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, dry mouth, diabetes, smoking history, or frequent cavities may need visits every three or four months.
The right schedule is personal. At Gateway Smiles, we recommend a recall interval based on what we see clinically, not a one-size-fits-all calendar.
